Written an opera? We wanna hear it!
A2 is devoted to keeping opera alive and well in our fair city and as part of that mission we'd like to encourage those who continue to create great operas! This season we proudly presented a brand new work by composer Tim Hinck called Eve Apart. Next year we will present the winners of the 2014 Competition!
Deadline for all applications this year was November 1st 2014 and we will begin taking submissions again on June 1st 2015 for the next cycle, so come back then to submit electronically and/or pay the application fee. You may download the details below!
Artisti Affamati Chamber Opera Competition 2014
Scores for this year must be submitted by November 1st, 2014. Adjudication will take place and winners notified by March 31st 2015. The two winning submissions will be scheduled for performance in their entirety in Artisti Affamati’s 2015-2016 season.
Requirements:
-This competition is open to all composers regardless of age or nationality
-All submissions must be unpublished operas not yet accepted by a publisher for publication or for rental.
-Works that have been performed are acceptable, but they cannot have been performed by an opera company with a yearly budget or $75,000 or more. (budget information can be found online, but this would constitute a major opera company)
-Libretto can be in English, French, Italian, or German. If not in English, then English translation must be included.
-Works must be 60 minutes performance time or less.
-Orchestration must be for no more than 20 players. Works scored for only keyboard or solo instrument will be accepted.
-Composers may submit more than one work given that each work meet all requirements.
Submission components:
-A cover letter including your contact information and a brief description of the submitted work to be included with your materials.
-One complete piano-vocal score that contains a list of characters with assigned voice types and the orchestral instrumentation.
-Copy of the libretto. If not in English then orginal libretto and English translation must both be included.
-Payment of application fee in the amount of $45 either by check made out to Artisti Affamati or by credit card via our website www.artistiaffamati.com.
-If there is a recording in existence we encourage you to include it with your submission though it is not required.
-Submissions may be sent electronically through our website. Hard copy submissions must be received by November 1st and sent to our physical address listed below.
-If you would like your materials returned to you, an SASE with the appropriate amount of postage must be included with your submission.
***THE NAMES OF THE LIBRETTIST AND COMPOSER MUST NOT APPEAR ON SUBMITTED COPIES OF THE SCORE OR RECORDINGS. This is to ensure fair judging by our panel and any scores not in compliance with this request will be eliminated from the competition***
Process:
-All submissions will be reviewed by a panel of judges: 2 representatives of Artisti Affamati, 2 regional composers, and one independent professional instrumentalist.
-4 works will be chosen by vote to be semi finalists. Those 4 will receive full sing throughs by the staff singers of Artisti Affamati.
-2 works will then be chosen by vote by the judges to be the winners.
-The two winning submissions will be then cast and performances will take place during the 2015-2016 season.
-Should composers of winning submissions wish to attend the live performance of their work, housing will be provided for two nights in Chattanooga.
